- Penn Jersey Roller Derby (PJRD) is a co-ed roller derby league that is skater-owned and operated. It consists of 4 teams, the Hooligans (our Men’s team), She Devils (women’s travel team) and 2 intra-league women’s teams. PJRD expects to add new women’s teams in the near future.
- PJRD skates monthly games from September to June, with a one-month break in December.
- PJRD is a member of the Old School Derby Association (OSDA). The OSDA’s other member leagues include: Chesapeake Roller Derby (Maryland), Man’s Ruin Roller Derby (New York), Richmond Derby Demons (Virginia), and South Jersey Derby.
- Founded as the Penn Jersey She Devils (PJSD) in 2005 by Ken Sikes and Greg Spencer, ours was the first league to bring roller derby back to the Philadelphia region after almost 30 years. In the interest of better reflecting our co-ed status, the league’s name was updated to Penn Jersey Roller Derby in 2010.
- In the interest of keeping today’s version of derby as close to banked-track rules as possible, Penn Jersey helped found the Old School Derby Association in 2007. OSDA’s rules are designed specifically to keep derby real, rough, and unpredictable – as it should be!
- For the past 5 years, PJRD has skated flat track derby, as do most of the hundred plus leagues around the world. However, we are excited to announce our evolution into the only active banked track league on the east coast, and the only co-ed amateur banked track league in the world!
OSDA Mission Statement
The OSDA was created for those who want to skate something more akin to what the original Roller Derby was like. It is the goal of OSDA & its members to restore ties with “Old School” skaters, trainers and coaches from past decades and learn from their experiences and input. It is our belief that there is a huge untapped fan base out there longing for Roller Derby skated in Old School fashion. OSDA feels that by excluding those legendary Old School skaters and patrons, many find they cannot connect enthusiastically to the sport they used to love.
Old School rules were created by melding many of the current developments in Flat Track Derby with the rules used by Old School Banked Track Roller Derby skaters. These rules were developed by the Penn Jersey She Devils through consultation with representatives from Derby teams from the 70s and we believe add to an exciting game for both the fans & the players.
We believe that it is possible to entertain and inspire a crowd with an aggressive, hard-skated Old School game. OSDA believes that the draw was, is, and should continue to be the game, pure & simple, no gimmicks, just the incredible skill of the skaters.
It is the goal of the OSDA to once again show the beauty of a game that has kept Derby fans Derby fans for years.
Media Coverage, Events, and Exposure

Highlights have included: Segments on NBC10, CN8, Comcast Sportsnet, and an OSDA-wide episode on Food Network’s Dinner Impossible. Our league has also been featured in articles in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Weekly, Philadelphia Metro, the Trentonian, Bucks County Courier Times, Bucks County Midweek, the cover of Philly Fit, and many more. Members of Penn Jersey were also recently featured in the latest music video from CKY, “A#1 Roller Rager”
Penn Jersey has also held multiple events at local Philly establishments such as Drinker’s Tavern, the Barbary, and the Pontiac Grille to drive recruitment and roller derby awareness. Some of our other events have included:
- Hosting classic roller derby film nights at the Balcony Bar at the Trocadero.
- Having tables at local tattoo and horror conventions, such as Monstermania and Philadelphia Eddie’s Tattoo Arts Convention.
- Throwing numerous ‘Band Showcase’ fundraisers to generate support for local musicians as well as PJRD.
- Participation in Philly and South NJ parades for St. Patrick’s day and other community celebrations
As of January 2010, we are proud to announce that we have a new permanent home in Philadelphia, PA at 19th and Indiana Streets. Our new facility is a 20,000 square foot warehouse that houses both banked and flat tracks. This space enables us to host our own shows, parties, and events to drive recruitment, awareness, and sponsorship. Located just north of Temple University’s campus, it is easily accessed through public transportation and features private off-street parking. It is our intention to keep banked track roller derby in Philadelphia for years to come. We will be skating our monthly flat track games in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, as well as traveling to other OSDA leagues, with plans to begin skating banked track games before the summer of 2010.
In the months leading up to our banked track debut, we will be hosting numerous events at our new, dedicated facility, and we are looking for local businesses that would like to cross-promote and sponsor Penn Jersey Roller Derby.
